The New Year Name Game

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Hope you’ve all had a good holiday and we wish you all a happy and prosperous new year. We couldn’t wait to kick the tail end of 2021 to the curb and start anew. That said, on to the meat of this post:

No, we’re not ready to fully resume production just yet; we’re still recovering from the holidays and we both are taking a bit of a mental health break, but new stuff is on the way, expect to see new posts and things to start cropping up within the upcoming months.

Jason covered some of this already, but just to keep you folks updated on what’s to come here, some of the site’s recurring segments have either been retired, retooled or renamed slightly. Some examples:

The segment formerly known as TV Special Showdown will now be known as TV Special Tonight!. Jason felt that the previous name sounded too confrontational and no longer fit the format as the segment has over time stopped taking the stance of “We’re gonna tear this crappy TV special a new one!” and has gravitated more towards “Hey, check out this kooky TV special we remember; let’s have fun joking about its’ absurdities!”. (Fun fact: the new name was partially inspired by the song “TV Party Tonight” by Black Flag.)

I’ve recently put the Retro Bin segment on ice, while its’ flip side segment, the Cartoon Couch, will continue under the new moniker The Couch.

“Wow. You must’ve been up all night thinkin’ of that name, huh?”

It’ll be basically be the same segment as before, just with a new name and without its’ negative counterpart. Now you may be asking:

“If the segment is basically the same as before, why not just keep calling it The Cartoon Couch?”

Good question. It’s because I originally created The Cartoon Couch to be the opposite of The Retro Bin (both are lookbacks at animated shows from the past, but while The Retro Bin took a very snarky, critical approach to the shows, the shows spotlighted on The Cartoon Couch we had a particular fondness for, or at least felt that they had potential or were deserving of more praise than they received; as we continued to work on both segments, we found ourselves enjoying doing the positive ones more and we’ve grown really tired of the ‘Angry Review” format), and even though we’re basically retiring The Retro Bin, the 2 segments are inexorably tied to one another — like opposite sides of the same coin –and it just wouldn’t feel right keeping one title without the other.

It would be like having Quisp without Quake; you don’t do that.

So if The Cartoon Couch is going to exist on its’ own from now on, it needs to establish its’ own identity, hence the name change.

The segments known as Ad Nausea and Toon Adjacent will hereinafter be absorbed and combined into a single segment known as Retroville.

Welcome to your memories!

Retroville will take fun deep dives into all kinds of retro kitsch: defunct retailers, restaurants, ad campaigns, product mascots, toys, theme park attractions, you name it. We’ve been looking forward to doing this one for a while; I can’t wait to start busting out with Retroville segments. We’re pop-culture sponges who watched a ton of TV, so this should be fun.

The above were all more or less covered by Jason previously; the following is something we’ve been kicking back and forth for a little while, and I didn’t want to reveal this unless it looked like it could actually happen, and since it might, here it is:

We might, repeat, MIGHT, be parting ways with the name Twinsanity.

At least we won’t have to juggle a plethora of alternate choices; if we do change this site’s name, it will be to one of two alternates: Twin Images or The Razzle Dazzle Show.

The former is the name we’ve been calling our comedy ‘troupe’ for years now; we actually saw the name on a record album (remember those?) that we saw one day years ago at W. Bell & Co. (remember that?). The latter is a homage to the Saturday Morning show starring the comedy/musical group the Hudson Brothers, which ran from September 7, 1974 to August 30, 1975.

For no particular reason, here’s the intro (for those who aren’t ancient enough to have seen it):

So yeah, you can probably see what attracted us to that name. It seems to combine fun, flash and pure corn, just like our site.

No need to freak out; if, and again that’s IF, we do decide to change the site’s name, you won’t have to memorize a new URL…at least not right away. Thankfully, WordPress give users the option to either replace the URL entirely or it can redirect viewers to the new one directly from the previous one. If we decide to go with a new name, we’ll enact the latter option and then when everyone’s used to and has had time to store the new URL, we’ll switch it to the new one, and of course if the name of the WordPress site changes, our companion Tumblr page will also take on the new name. Unified branding and all that.

We’re literally going back and forth on this, so we’ll put the question out to you guys. (I’d do it as a poll, but if there’s a way to polls on here, I don’t know what it is.) Would you guys be cool with a name change, or would you rather we stick to Twinsanity? Let us know in the comments (and I shouldn’t have to tell you that spam, hate, insulting or trollish comments will not be tolerated or posted).

Well, that’s all for now. More updates as they happen. Thanks for sticking with us through this strange, strange trip, we look forward to posting here more regularly soon, we’re still planning that big leap to video production, so we’ll keep you informed on that as things go along, again Happy New Year, here’s hoping 2022 is a good one, and keep on boogeying down.

  1. Some of you may have noticed that it’s already started. As of this writing, the Toon Adjacent segments (as well as a couple of the Ad Nasea segments) have been rebranded under the heading Retroville. In the case of the latter, it’s the ones that fit the Retroville theme. The Cartoon Couch is now being called The Couch and the few remaining Wild World of Shows posts are also listed under this heading. TV Special Showdown has been renamed TV Special Tonight! and all of the Videots segments are listed as Player Two Start. So, if you want to revisit some of the older posts and don’t know where they are, just refer to this guide in order to avoid confusion.
