Toons & Tunes: Christmas Tauntauns

Yes, this is yet another Christmas themed video. I can hear your collective groans, but ’tis the season, so deal with it.

This little ditty manages to be fun, sweet and quirky without getting overly sappy or sentimental like many holiday songs tend to do. The CGI is a tad primitive and the singing is a smidge flat, but to be fair this was the early 2000’s and the singer, Kirsty Dawson, was only 16 at the time and this was her first time performing in a recording studio. Anyways, George Lucas himself apparently liked the short, since he hand picked it as the winner of a Star Wars fan film contest. Enjoy Christmas Tauntauns.

2 Funny: SNL – I Wish It Was Christmas Today

On this 2 Funny, we look back at a holiday classic number. I’m sure we’ve all seen this bit, as it’s been done many times on the show. I haven’t watched NBC’s Saturday Night Live much in the past few years (OK, I haven’t been watching it at all), but this bit still makes me chuckle.Kudos to Horatio Sanz, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan and Tracy Morgan for performing their parts well. Recently, some Acura car commercial is attempting to have a millenial hipster version of the song, but I say forget that! Sometimes campy and comical is the only way to go. Here’s “I Wish It was Christmas Today”.

Nerdvana: Warm Up to Winter

This is one of the few recent McDonald’s commercials that I genuinely like. It’s big on the warm fuzzies, but I like it anyway. The young woman in it is fetching and cute, especially when she opens her eyes at the end (so big and blue-green!) and the tune,  “Keep Me Warm” by The Little Estate featuring Erin Bowman, is bouncy and charming, and this is coming from someone who’s generally not big on winter. Enjoy.

Nerdvana: "Light the Sky on Fire" by Jefferson Starship

Not surprisingly, given that it’s December, several of this month’s entries have been Christmas themed, and this Nerdvana is no exception…sort of. This song was featured in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, despite having nothing to do with the holidays or Star Wars. Nonetheless, this number was THE highlight of that special (well, Bea Arthur’s number had its’ moments). Enjoy “Light the Sky on Fire”.

I especially like the brief shot of Art Carney getting down.
