Brain Candy: The Universe Is Imploding…Don’t Tell Mom!

Not too long ago, Phelan Porteous (Phelous) presented a video review of Our Friend Power 5 (a South Korean movie made to promote a toy line that unnaturally mashes up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Voltron, and must be seen to be believed).

This got me thinking about the types of roles that parent characters usually play on shows tailored for kids. I know that this is the type of thing that most people don’t even notice or care about, but I usually notice because I’m a weirdo.

Gonzo

“Nothing wrong with that! Weirdness is a lifestyle choice!”

I’ve noticed that in most Eastern (Japanese, Korean) shows that focus on kids going on amazing adventures, doing science fiction-y stuff and so forth, it will often be the father who has a secondary role in the proceedings, such as the dad being a professor or some type of scientist who will assist the kid protagonists in their adventures, while the mother will usually just be a happy housewife who has no connection to the fantasy side of the show other than being related to and living in the same house as the kid protagonist(s). Some examples include:

Speed Racer Mifune Family

The Mifune family (from Speed Racer):

Mr. Racer – A former wrestler turned owner of the Go! racing team franchise.

Mrs. Racer – Subscribes to Good Housekeeping and Woman’s Day.

Dr.Spike_taylor

The Taylor Family (from Dinosaur King):

Dr. Spike Taylor – Archaeologist who assist the D-Team and sometimes directs the kids to that mission’s location.

Aki Taylor

Aki Taylor – Artist. Housewife. Makes a mean tuna casserole.

Now, my first thought is that something like this would never fly in an American kids’ show. If us yanks ever tried to have a formula like the one aforementioned, there would the inevitable cries of…

Phoenix_Point

“THAT’S SEXIST!!”

Most likely American kids show producers would deal with this issue by simply omitting the mother character altogether, which I don’t like. At all.

Transfromers Rescue Bots Family

Boo on you, you mother hating so-and-sos! Go write for Disney feature films!

Now don’t get me wrong. Generally speaking, I prefer it when mother characters are active characters who do things, such as Phoebe Calisto from Miles From Tomorrowland, who’s not only a crew member of the Stellasphere, but she’s the ship’s captain!

Phoebe Callisto

“That’s Captain Mrs. Calisto if you’re nasty!”

…but even if the mother of the main family is basically Susie Homemaker, I’ll take that over the total absence of a mother from the household.

Maya & Miguel - Rosa & Santiago

Or both parents could be clueless domestics. That works too.

Personally, I haven’t seen any anime or Asian kids where the parents roles are reversed. That is, where the mom is the scientist/adventurer who helps the kids and the dad is just the dad. Mind you, I don’t watch a lot of anime, so if any such examples do indeed exist, feel free to enlighten me.

I know that this character isn’t a mother, but I want to give an honorable mention to Nintendo’s character Pauline.

Pauline

In the course of the character’s history, Pauline went from being Mario’s one time helpless (and blonde) girlfriend who existed solely to be captured by Donkey Kong…

Ad Nausea: A Universal Reach

So, recently I came across this commercial for Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida:

Basically, the message that Universal Studios seems to be touting here is: “Walt Disney World is for babies! Come to Universal Studios, where things are more grown-up!”

Here’s my initial reaction to that statement:

tenor

“More grown-up”, huh? Really. So, Universal is trying to steer people away from Disney’s theme park with it’s rides, shows and costumed mascots and have them go to their “more mature” theme park with their rides, shows and costumed mascots.

Do you see the questionable content here?

Universal is saying: “Disney has that babyfied Star Wars franchise…

StarWarsPosters14009JF.0.0

…but we’ve got Harry Potter!”

Harry Potter poster

Yeah, one’s a fairy tale set in space while the other is a story about a school where kids learn how to become magical wizards. I’m not seeing how one is any more mature or edgier than the other.

Universal says: “Forget the Marvel Universe, with it’s kiddie friendly super heroes…

avengers_age_of_ultron_2015_movie-wide

Optimus Prime

…WE’VE got magical, transforming alien robots, bee-yotch!”

Again, I’m not seeing the difference in maturity levels here.

Listen, Universal; I get that competition is cutthroat. I get that you have to do whatever you need to do in order to attract people to your theme parks. If you want to claim that Universal Studios is better than Walt Disney World, then fine. Say that, but don’t try to play the “we’re more grown up than them” card and then immediately afterwards cut to a kid posing with Optimus Prime and tourists hanging out with people in Minions costumes! Of all the adjectives that I would use to describe the Minions, mature isn’t one of them.

Nerdvana: Just Ducky!

We’re living in an interesting time right now. While some things are just plain awful, there are some things that are definitely cool. For one thing, last year Disney launched it’s reboot of DuckTales.

DuckTales_titlecard

This reboot is an improvement over the original in several ways, not the least of which is that the reboot includes the return of this guy: Donald Duck.

Donald Duck

Not only is Donald part of the main cast (as he should have been from the get-go – Carl Barks’ original comics series has always focused on Scrooge, the nephews and Donald), but he’s back as his old slapstick-y self, engaging in the wacky cartoon hijinks that made him famous. Viz…

Donald Duck GIF

Yeah, now that’s the stuff, man!

Having Donald around as a main character fits in to the new DuckTales perfectly. I even have an easier time accepting supporting characters such as Launchpad McQuack and Fenton Crackshell (Gizmoduck) this time around, because here they’re not serving as stand-ins for Donald.

Then on the Warner Brothers side, we have New Looney Tunes (formerly known as Wabbit! here in the U.S.) with it’s new old take on Daffy.

Daffy Duck

Here. in the States, we have to watch the series on Boomerang’s online streaming service because Turner doesn’t air the show on Boomerang U.S. for some unfathomable reason. Anyway, in New Looney Tunes, Daffy is back to being certifiably insane rather than Bugs’ greedy, jealous rival. Take a look:

I don’t need to elaborate on this much, since Damon has already covered New Looney Tunes and it’s take on Daffy both here and here. So basically, I’m going to echo what he said (and not for the first time): While I like the selfish, greedy, egotistical version of Daffy OK for the most part, the above has always been the version of the little black duck that I’ve always preferred, and this version was long overdue for a return. I sincerely hope that crazy Daffy sticks around for a while for future Looney Tunes projects, as this version of Daffy has been sorely missed.

Yes, it’s definitely a good time to be a fan of cartoon ducks. Hit it!

Jonesin’ For Brain Candy

We were looking over some of our earlier posts and we noticed that our most recent Highly Opinionated post was Confessions of a Superman Fan, which was written by me back in April……of 2016.

Yes, that’s right; neither of us has written a Highly Opinionated in two years. I knew that the last one wasn’t recent, but I didn’t think that we’d gone that long without writing one. The reason for this could likely be because we’ve since retired from posting on forums, and so there haven’t been any opinions or points for us to rant about.

Which brings me to the topic of this post: Recently, Damon and I have thinking about retooling Highly Opinionated into something a little different. Something resembling less of a rant post and more of a stream of consciousness type of thing. No offense to these guys:

AVGN

Nostalgia-Critic

…But the whole “angry critic” thing is kind of played out now. After James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd) and Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic) broke out and became huge, there then came the inevitable string of imitators and wanna-bes. However, ranting for entertainment purposes is an art and few are it’s masters. These days, we tend to prefer the producers who dare to try to do something different. Likewise, Damon and I have since adapted a less angry, more humorous approach. More zany and snarky then flat out-and-out ranty, if that makes any sense.

The point? I’m getting to that. Much like how earlier we remade Reviews On The Run into Cartoon Country, effective immediately, we’ll be retooling Highly Opinionated and giving the segment a new name. Henceforth, the aforementioned segment will from now on be referred to as Brain Candy.

Candy

Sweet, sweet candy!

Basically, these posts will be our rambling and strange thoughts about various subjects. Like junk food for the mind. They will still be our opinions, but instead of raving about things, we’ll just be musing randomly and pointlessly about stuff that’s running through our heads. We’ll still complain about something if we feel the need to, but that’ll no longer the main focus of the posts. We’ve already got a couple of these in the works as of this writing, so stay tuned.

Cartoon Country: Out Of Fuel

For today’s Cartoon Country, we’ll be venturing into the twisted, demented world of Cartoon Network’s original series, Uncle Grandpa.

Uncle Grandpa

“Good morning!”

The story I’ll be covering today is titled “Out of Fuel”, which is actually a short that aired with the season 2 episode “Uncle Grandpa Retires”, in which Uncle G fills in for the spare tire of his own RV and likes it so much that he wants to keep the job permanently.

WTF

Yeah, you have to have seen the show for that to make sense. Anyway, on with the short. The iconic uncle and grandfather of everyone in the world is on the road with his running crew (Belly Bag, Pizza Steve, Mr. Gus, Giant Realistic Flying Tiger, Tiny Miracle and Frankenstein) playing an epic game of Twister when things go awry.

That’s right; Uncle Grandpa’s RV runs on weirdness rather than gas, so the gang sets out to find some spare weirdness in The Big City.

The_Gang_Tiny_Miracle_and_Frankenstein_in_Out_of_Fuel_25

So to recap, these guys…

Uncle Grandpa & Friends…THESE GUYS…

…don’t know where they can find a source of weirdness to fuel the RV, so they search The Big City trying to find some. After a few minutes of shtick, they eventually come to the conclusion…

Glinda the Good Witch

“They had the weirdness with them all along!”

With this new found revelation, UG extracts some weirdness from his buddies

UG - Out of Fuel

which results in them nearly getting sucked into a vortex. However, Uncle G does manage to snag a small piece of the weird aura and uses it to finally fuel the RV. It’s here where he delivers the coup de grace: He says:

ug_unclegrandpa_180x180

“With a piece of weirdness this small, the RV can only run for another 10,000 years. Maybe 20,000 if we rotate the wipers regularly.”

WTF

And that was “Out of Fuel”. Now, the surreal nuttiness of Uncle Grandpa is an acquired taste. You’re either going to enjoy it or you just won’t. One of the biggest complaints that I’ve heard regarding UG is that the series lacks depth and heart, in response to this, I would ask these people “Why are you expecting depth and heart on a cartoon called Uncle Grandpa? The show is precisely what it is. Either accept it for what it is or don’t deal with it at all. It’s not complex. I’ve always enjoyed kooky, wacky humor and for some reason, I like the idea of a vehicle that runs solely on weirdness. Why are we wasting are time burning gasoline when we should just start traveling with a weirdo or two?
