2 Funny: Laff-A-Munich

The massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich by the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the secret retaliation for said attack from the Israeli government known as Operation Act of God, was a tragic event which inspired a sobering 2005 historical drama/political thriller entitled Munich, produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. This unfortunate incident wasn’t funny at all, but imagine a re-enactment of the trailer for the film set in the Laff-A-Lympics universe, and that’s a different matter entirely. Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken brings us today’s 2 Funny, Laff-A-Munich. Enjoy.

A bit of a nitpick: Scrappy-Doo was never featured in Laff-A-Lympics; he made his debut on Scooby and Scrappy-Doo in 1979, a year after the final season of LAL, on ABC’s Scooby’s All-Stars, but since the scene in question had me in stitches, I’m willing to overlook that little hiccup.

2 Funny: Street Fighter Red Tape

Today’s April Fool’s Day–the day for pranks, jokes and general tomfoolery. (Though for us every day is kind of like that.) In the spirit of this occasion, we present a series if vignettes by comedian Pete Holmes as a bureaucrat giving the combatants from Capcom’s Street Fighter 2 franchise the blues. Here’s Street Fighter Red Tape. All 8 of them.

RYU (feat. Mark-Paul Gosselaar)

VEGA (feat. Thomas Middleditch)

BLANKA (feat. Matt McCarthy)

M. BISON (feat. Patrick Huesinger)

GUILE (feat. Joel McHale)

DHALSIM (feat. Kumail Nanjani)

CHUN-LI (feat. Lilan Bowden)

KEN (feat. Thomas Middleditch–again)

And finally, for no good reason, a completely gratuitous shot of Cammy’s cheeks.

Happy April Something Something Whatever!

2 Funny: The Wacky Racers Go LIVE!

We first peeped this out on Hobbyfan’s blog, Saturday Morning Archives.

This is a pretty cool 2014 spot for Puegeot, which obtained the license for some of the characters from Hanna-Barbera and Heatter/Quigley’s Wacky Races for an ad campaign. In this spot, several of the Wacky Racers (Dick Dastardly & Muttley in car #00 the Mean Machine, the Slag Brothers in car #1, the Boulder Mobile, the Gruesome Twosome in car #2 The Creepy Coupe, The Red Max in car #4 the Crimson Haybailer, Penelope Pitstop in car #5 the Compact Pussycat, Sgt. Blast and Private Meekly in car #6 the Army Surplus Special, the Ant Hill Mob in car #7 the Bulletproof Bomb and Peter Perfect in car #9 the Turbo Terrific) make a daily drive difficult for an ordinary motorist in a Puegeot. The catch: this spot is in LIVE-ACTION.

Apparently, this ad aired in Europe only. Pity.

Toons & Tunes: How Funky is Funky Phantom?

The late Adult Swim series Harvey Birdman, Attorney-At-Law made a career out of skewering the classic Hanna-Barbera shows and characters from the 60’s through 80’s, a little too harshly and with mixed results, some would say, but every so often a good gag managed to pop up. Here’s a bit from the show that I’ve always found amusing, in which Peanut (this show’s fun house mirror version of Birdman’s sidekick Birdboy) dares to ask Jonathan Muddlemore, aka the Funky Phantom, just what makes him so funky.

2 Funny: Dickie Crickets and Druggachussets

Before Bob Odenkirk was making it big on shows like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he was paired with David Cross on one the best sketch comedy shows in recent years, Mr. Show with Bob and David. I have no problem with comedians wanting to stretch their chops and become serious actors, though personally I don’t see what’s wrong with just bringing the yuks. Today’s 2 Funny is a double-shot: 2 of my favorite sketches from Mr. Show. First, “Dickie Crickets, King of the Megaphone Crooners”.

Next, “The Altered State of Druggachussets”, a full-on sendup of Sid & Marty Krofft’s H.R. Pufenstuf, poking fun at the common belief among wiseguys and stand-up comics that during their stint on Saturday morning TV, the Kroffts were high on something else other than life. (Note that both skits feature the man who would one day become the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants, Tom Kenny. This skit also features the voice of comic Jill Talley, whom Adult Swim fans may recognize as the voice of Sarah Dubois from The Boondocks. Both Kenny and Talley were regulars on Mr. Show, and before that appeared together on the short-lived FOX sketch comedy series The Edge. (In fact, during their stint on Mr. Show together, Kenny and Talley were married.)

Man, I miss shows like this. I wish HBO and other cable channels would give us more shows like this as an alternative to the endless swarm of “critically acclaimed dramas”, which quite frankly tend to look the same and run together to me. Forget zombie fighters, sexy vampires and thrones of gaming, give me more zaniness with comics mugging it up in kooky costumes. Good stuff, man, good stuff.
