This is another one of our jams. I’ve wanted to showcase this song here for a while, but finding a decent copy of it wasn’t an easy task.
When JG Quintel’s Regular Show made it’s debut on Cartoon Network on September 6, 2010, I noticed right off of the bat that this was not just your typical Saturday morning kiddie fare, what with the 80s-90s feel to it and the saltier language (although CN insisted that JG and company tone down the offensive words in later episodes). But then, RS aired an episode titled “Mordecai and the Rigby’s” and I heard this song for the very first time. Like many others, I immediately began searching for an mp3 of the song (I found one eventually). The song was written by RS writer Sean Szeles, who has a recording of the complete song on his blog with himself doing the vocals, although it was later-re-recorded with Mordecai (JG Quintel)’s voice. Also, in the episode, the song had to be cut for time because of course, there was a story to tell.
I couldn’t find a copy of the original version sang by Sean Szeles (it’s no longer on YouTube), but the song was used again for a Cartoon Network promo for Regular Show, which is the one that I’m going to use here. The visuals with the costumed actors look like they stepped right out of Cirque De Soleil, but it’s a great song. Enjoy one of my all time favorite songs, “Party Tonight”.
Back in June, Damon (Silverstar) posted a Nerdvana segment in which he discussed his favorite Pony Tribes ‘N’ Cutie Marks. Inspired by this, I’ve decided to list some additional Cutie Marks that I prefer. I don’t have anything to add about the tribes, so I won’t be discussing those. Also, these choices won’t be listed in any particular order, so I won’t be numbering them.
And before anyone asks, no, I won’t be reviewing the recent My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episode “Crusaders of the Lost Mark”. As good as the episode was, I won’t be writing a review of it because a) as was stated a few times before, this isn’t a review site, and b) literally everyone on the internet and their Uncle Gus has reviewed that episode by now, so there’s no reason for me to. That said, let the nerd talk begin!
APPLEJACK
Applejack doesn’t get the attention that characters like Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie get, but we here at Twinsanity like to root for underdogs. AJ has a laid back down home quality to her that I find to be quite appealing. Applejack’s Cutie Mark is likewise lacking in bells and whistles. Yeah, it’s just 3 apples, but sometimes a design can be brilliant in it’s simplicity.
Incidentally, we’re also fans of the Apple Family and Sweet Apple Acres, so I may be doing a separate piece on just them somewhere down the line…
“I’m a-pickin’…”
“…And I’m a-grinnin’!”
AUNT AND UNCLE ORANGE
On the subject of Applejack, I’m going to give honorable mention to AJ’s Aunt and Uncle Orange, a pair of city-wise sophisticates from the big city of Manehattan. because I like the gag of the rural Apple family having sophisticated city cousins who are all named after oranges.
“I GET IT!”
“There’s only one thing that’s better than having money, and that’s having more money!”
MOON DANCER
Moon Dancer is an update of a G2 pony with the same name. Again, I like this Cutie Mark. The moon and 3 stars (or sparkles, depending on your point of view) with the 2 different shades of purple look good against that color. But just a piece of advice, Moon Dancer, get yourself a pair of glasses without tape on them. That’s not stylish.
TWILIGHT VELVET
Another update of a G1 pony who in this incarnation is Twilight Sparkle’s mother. I’m digging the combination of white and purple on the mane and tail. Again, her Cutie Mark is a pretty basic one: just 3 stars, but but sometimes simple wins out.
SWEETIE DROPS, aka BON-BON
Sweetie Drops is the official name for this character that Hasbro has given her, while Bon-Bon is the name that was given to her by the MLP fans before her official name was revealed. Personally, I prefer Bon-Bon, myself. Anyway, Bon-Bon is usually seen with her “best friend” Lyra (yeah, they’re “good friends”. Let’s go with that), but her’s is the design that I like more. In addition to that bitchin’ blue and pink mane, her Cutie mark is 3 candies. I do like the cavity indicing sweet stuff.
MEDLEY
The only G1 pony to make this list. While green wouldn’t be my first choice of color, I do like the Cutie mark design of musical notes.
THE CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS
From left to right, Sweetie Belle, Apple Bloom and Scootaloo
I saved these 3 for last because as anyone who’s been following the show knows, the CMCs have only recently joined the ranks of Ponies with Cutie Marks. Notice how all of their Cutie Marks have the same design, only with different identifying symbols on them. I like how the symbols of each are actually personalized to the characters. I especially like Scootaloo’s wing/lightning bolt combo. I’m only a casual fan of the show, but the “Crusaders of the Lost Mark” episode was epic win. Congratulations, Crusaders! You’ve still got to go to bed at 9, but until then, party like rock stars! This note’s for you:
It’s time to geek out over a setting again. Today Nerdvana takes a look at the world of Dragon Ball.
This show rocks your balls!
Time for the obligatory disclaimer: this isn’t a review. By now there have been literally dozens upon dozens of reviews, commentaries and analyses on the adventures of Son Goku and the gang, which is why I’m not going to bother trying it myself. I’ll be specifically talking about the world that show is set in, not the show itself. Now, on to the fun:
Like most artists/writers, I’m a sucker for fantasy worlds. Some people prefer medieval fantasy, others prefer steampunk, some even fancy dystopia (I personally find dystopian settings to be about as much fun as a route canal, but that’s just me). One of my favorite fantasy settings is what I’ve come to term 30 Minutes into the Future, or the World of Next Tuesday. It’s a contemporary fantasy world setting which resembles our world, but not entirely. The version of Earth envisioned by Akira Toriyama in such works as Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump is a good example of the type of fantasy setting I’d like to make a cartoon about one day. One which resembles contemporary Earth, but tweaked and twisted with some futuristic, mythical and just plain outlandish elements.
Let’s start with the architecture. I love Toriyama’s environments and cityspcapes; the ovoid and spherical buildings and structures, mostly gleaming white.
Totally globular!
I also like the designs and mythos surrounding its’ inhabitants.
People…people who like Dragon Balls…are the luckiest people in the world.
According to the story of Dragon Ball Online, which takes place in their year 1000, the humans have the longest established culture on Earth, and they’re also the most prolific, having spread to all corners of the world, including the Wastelands. As of Age 1000, the human race has become cross-bred with the Saiyan race, and as such, many believe that the race holds a powerful, hidden potential, due to their part Saiyan blood. This setting has spawned 3 main classifications of humans which I’d also like to adapt in a work:
Martial Artists – Warriors that specialize primarily in martial arts, with limited use of ki.
“Boot to the head!”
Spiritualists – Mystics that specialize in spiritual, ki (or mana)-based techniques.
“Whimmy-wham-wham-whuzzle!”
-I’d prefer to be a Spiritualist over a Martial Artist, since I’ve always been more into Magic than Might.
Really, they’re both good choices. As long as I get to be one of the people who can fly, s’all good.
And finally, Engineers – Mechanics and inventors who build weapons and utilize technology.
“I’m blinding you, with SCIENCE!”
Which brings me to the next thing I love about Toriyama’s Earth: the advanced technology, particularly the innvations provided by the Capsule Corporation.
CAPSULE CORP. Bringing you into the future…this afternoon.
This company is responsible for the capsules which can store anything from a water bottle to a car to a tent to a small house.
In your face, Public Storage!
Plus, you get to live and operate from a giant yellow dome!
Also, I love the Capsule Corp. logo. It’s a typography geek’s dream. Dr. and Mrs. Brief, please adopt me.
Another cool device this world boasts is the freaking hovercar.
It’s a FLYING CAR. Come on.
From the makers of the hoverboard…
..And the hovercycle.
Perfect for quick trips to the store, jaunts to the beach, cruising ’round the countryside or evading Storm-troopers on the planet Endor.
As previously stated, I really dig the designs and unique quirks of the people in Toriyama’s works.
The punnish names, the quirky clothes…
Body by Nature. Hair by Youthful Rebellion. Outfit by Hot Topic.
…The unusual colored hair…
“No dye job, honey. This is a natural purple.”
..I even like the talking animal people.
I’m aware of what Jason previously covered in Furry Confusion, and I agree with the points made there, but hear me out. On Toriyama’s Earth, 17% of its’ sapient population were talking animal people, because Toriyama just enjoys drawing them, however I’ve always felt that if you anthropomorphize animals too much then there’s no point in making them animals in the first place. That said, I do like the talking animal idea, I’d just execute it a little differently. In my head canon the Toriyama version of Earth is Hidden Kingdom from Hero: 108, only about a century or so in the future. In ancient times, animals and humans belonged to separate tribes which co-existed alongside one another. Humans began evolving and developing things like tools, weapons, vehicles, cities, burger joints and so on, while animals remained “savage” but eventually learned to speak the language of humans. This resulted in a sub-culture of sentient animals who are able to speak directly to humans but are still animals; they talk, occasionally walk upright but don’t wear full compliments of clothing, can’t operate vehicles or hold down jobs, and only the ones which are pets (though they prefer the term “companions”) live in houses and buildings. I’ve always wanted to do a story in which talking animals were a sort-of fun house mirror equivalent to the Mutants in the Marvel universe, and that’s how I’d execute this idea.
“You really have no life, do you?”
While we’re at it, let’s extend this “semi-anthropomorphism” to dinosaurs, since it’s already been established that dinos aren’t extinct in this world…
T-REX ON A SKATEBOARD! T-REX ON A SKATEBOARD!
…And why not extend that to their cousins, the dragons (as in the non-Eternal variety). They’re like dinosaurs but they can breathe fire, fly and other cool stuff.
A Dance with Dragons
BTW, this world follows Littlest Pet Shop logic, so people can have things like dinosaurs, dragons, monkeys, tigers, kangaroos and pastel colored pandas as pets.
Hello, toy sale tie-ins!
But you know who I truly envy in the Dragon Ball world?
This guy!
“HA-HAAA! WHO DA MAN?WHO DA MAN???!?”
Yeah, I know he’s a fraud and basically the joke/comic relief of the franchise, but you’ve gotta hand it to Mr. Satan; the guy’s the king of dumb luck. He managed to become stinking rich and super-famous, even getting an entire city named after him, for doing nothing. Classic case being in the right place at the right time. he is the Martial Arts Champion, so as normal humans go, he is actually pretty formidable, but he’s absolutely nothing compared to Goku and company.
Plus, you’ve gotta admit, that’s a pretty cool cape.
Today’s Nerdvana is another one of our jams. The band is Raging Slab and the album has one of my all time favorite titles: Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert. I first became aware of this song years ago when I caught it on MTV (to give you an idea how long ago this was, this was back when I watched MTV!). The music video is notable mostly for the appearance of the late Gary Coleman. I checked the video out for that, but stayed for the song. Enjoy “Anywhere But Here”.
Today’s Nerdvana celebrates 2 things we love around here: tech and desserts!
Undoubtedly, you tech-savvy smartphone and PC users (i.e., infomaniacs) have noticed that all of Android’s operating systems are not only alphabetical, but are named after sweet treats. Why? Evidently, programming and designing high-tech is hungry work, which would explain the waistline of the average tech-head.
“Worst. Cliched. Generalization. Ever.”
Let’s take a gander at the delicious Android hit parade, shall we?
Angel Cake
Battenberg
Cupcake
Donut
Eclair
Froyo
Gingerbread
Honeycomb
Ice Cream Sandwich
Jelly Bean
Kit Kat
The current OS, Lollipop….
…And the latest, just-unveiled OS, drum roll, please……
MARSHMALLOW.
“These are making me hungry, but then so does breathing, am I right? If wanting to nosh on a piece of technology is wrong, then I don’t wanna be right! Up-top!”
Trivia Time: Initially, Android’s operating systems were going to be named after robots, tying into the whole ‘Android’ theme. A popular internet rumor goes that versions 1.0 and 1.1 were originally called Astro, as in ‘Boy’…
…and Bender, but this idea was dropped. Why? Because everybody loves sweet treats. Plus, copyright lawsuits definitely aren’t delicious.
